Its called a Bak Gua, that's how you say it in Cantonese. It's shaped like an octagon where each corner is an area based on fung shui that protects the home from bad spirits. The center of the Bak Gua is a circular mirror. Most Chinese families hang it on top of their front doors. I used to have one too, until I moved.
