How come the British SAS wears a black gas mask all the time? Even @ raining weather?

If they use smoke or tear gas in an attack its a good idea to be able to breath! The SAS are a bit camera shy. If, say Andy McNab went on camera and showed his face, he would make himself instantly recognisable to people who would see him as the perfect hostage to take.

The only SAS guys whose faces you will see are either dead or retired. No serving trooper wants his ID knownHow come the British SAS wears a black gas mask all the time? Even @ raining weather?
to protect their identityHow come the British SAS wears a black gas mask all the time? Even @ raining weather?
Because they are movies and the guys in those movies aren't actually SAS?
only when doing CRW work or on ops where gas/biological agents are present.Other times, just the sand coloured beret,or no beret at all.
A prepared for all eventualities ... Also maintains anonymity if being filmed.
Yeah, black gas mask 24 hours a day - their teeth stink apparently - I saw one speed dating the other night - they don't make it easy for themsleves
They don't always wear the masks, especially not on undercover operations- i think they'd have looked a bit stupid running around Northern Ireland in casual wear and masks on =/.

They wear those masks because they use gases themselves and to protect them from gases used in attacks against them by their opposition. Also to ventilate them in smoke filled buildings- and also to protect their identity although they have balaclavas as well.
they are trained to wear them same as SBS are trained to wear them to mostly in case of chemical /gas the TV will always tell you it was the SAS that were here and there most of the time it is both SAS/SBS but there are many other unit that don't get the recognition like the SRR /RNC
It is due to perseived threats ie gas attackand it also aids lack of recognition . the could go into battle in any theatre hot, cold but still need to be prepared for any eventuality.

These guys are the best at what they do . Total respect
I think you'll find they don't wear gas masks all the time.

*rolls eyes
How do you know this?

The SAS are virtually invisible and the best in the world at what they do.

They are also a target for many terrorist factions so therefore when we see them on tv etc, they ensure that we never see their faces, extra security for their families etc.
They are worn for counter terrisiom work. I doubt they are lugging 24/7 around Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan tbh.
Do they? The black respirator is usually just worn during their Counter-Terrorist training and postings. In that role, it's to protect them from tear gas and also serves as a psychological weapon - it looks pretty scary to anyone facing them.

But the idea that infantrymen wear black gas masks all the time, especially in the field is somewhat ludicrous, I'm afraid.

I don't recall seeing anyone in gas masks in Bravo Two Zero.

The Iranian Embassy Incident was unique.

Call of Duty 4 is a speculative computer game set in the future.
how often do you see them ?
because if they need to use cs gas, or someoneelse uses gas it saves them the vital seconds of putting one on
Because pink would look ridiculous?
Because thats how they roll, they need to be prepared if they are tear gassed etc. They would train in one aswell, they probably don't even know they are wearing one since they are so used to it
