I don't think it's a good idea to get it wet, perhaps you could try talcum powder - brush it off with a baby's hair brush with the grain of the feathers or if you can still buy it, you could try dry shampoo; again you shake it in and brush it off. Other than that if you're in the UK ask the curator at your local museum.
